.Clumping varieties (non-invasive) form dense clumps, with very short rhizome inter-nodes (few cm’s). They stay where you plant them, don’t need to be curbed and are perfect for urban gardens as privacy screens or central features.

Running varieties (potentially invasive) spread out quickly by having long rhizome inter-nodes (up to a foot in length). New shoots pop up 1.5 to 3ft (90cm) from the mother plant within a short few months after planting and can spread a few meters a year. This causes problems in urban gardens when not managed but works great when planted within raised planters or when curbed by an underground barrier.
